Understanding of UK medical training structure and realistic, open-minded career thinking.
A structure to build your own answer on — not a script.
Show you know the pathway
Medical school (5–6 years) → Foundation Programme (2 years, provisional then full GMC registration) → specialty or GP training (GP about 3 years; hospital specialties typically 5–8 years including core training) → consultant or GP.
An honest, open interest
Something that currently interests you and why — but stay open.
Beyond clinical work
Teaching, research, leadership, global health — whatever genuinely interests you.
Realism
Competition for training posts, flexibility, life outside work.
A strong but not perfect answer. Read the notes to see why it works — then make your own version with your experiences.
In ten to fifteen years I'd hope to be finishing specialty training or recently qualified as a consultant or GP. The path would be medical school, then the two-year Foundation Programme1, then either GP training, which is about three years, or core and specialty training in a hospital specialty, which usually takes longer.
Right now I'm interested in paediatrics. At a special school where I volunteer, I've seen how much a child's condition shapes the whole family's life, and I like the idea of looking after a child's development over time rather than one episode. But I'm aware most people change their minds once they experience different specialties, and I want to keep an open mind2 — I could just as easily find I love general practice for the continuity.
Whatever I do, I'd like teaching to be part of it. I've enjoyed tutoring, and I've noticed the doctors I admired most on placement took time to explain things to students.
I also know training posts are competitive3 at the moment, which is part of why I'd want to use medical school to explore widely rather than lock in early.
